Hi guys,

This is my first thread...I own a 1984 Ebony Les Paul Custom. It has all silver/chrome hardware (removable string winder tuning pegs, pickup covers, bridge/saddle etc). It's also one of the best guitars I've ever played, and I've played a few!

I was wondering how many others have ebony customs with silver hardware, and whether anyone knows if this was standard option at any point, or whether this particular guitar was a special order from Gibson? At some point in it's life someone has replaced the neck pickup with a seymour duncan...but it sounds ace so I'm leaving it. Serial number is 80234581.

There is no way to tell exactly how many were made, but chrome hardware was an option on Customs from sometime in the '70s(an exact year isn't clear)to probably the late '80s..I don't know when it stopped being a regular option, so late '80s is an educated guess. In fact, quite a few of them left the factory with chrome without being special ordered..

There is a GC/MF exclusive Custom with chrome hardware still being made. Black/uncovered pups..

That's interesting. I've just not seen another one like it that's all. They all seem to have gold hardware. The built in string winders we also a normal factory fit then?

If you have facebook, here's a pic of the guitar in action!

Yes, those tuners were stock on many Customs from the period.

I want to say chrome hardware became an option in '77, but I could off by year or so... I've seen early '70s Customs with chrome, but I think it's more likely they were owner customized..

Don't worry, they are out there as I've seen plenty. Most Customs have always had gold though.

most I've seen from that era have chrome bridge and tail and nickel tuners, if they didn't come with gold hardware.

I chromed out my 2008 ebony Custom (and mirror pickguard) ala John Sykes. The stock gold hardware looked too "lounge band-ish", whereas the chrome looks more metal. I hot-rodded the Impaler to be a metal beast:
