hello,I need some help. I Am looking at this 92 les Paul standard pre-historic R6 on reverb. I want to make sure from the experts that this is a r6 not a les Paul classic. I tried to research it and am more confused than ever. Seller seems legit but from the posting of the cavities there are scribble marks in both. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Pat

Could it be a Les Paul classic premium plus that's some one has put covered pickups in?

It has R6 in the cavity. The writing appears legit. Seller states the following when asked
Pat, thus lies the issues with Gibson and the prehistoric's. If you contact Gibson, they will tell you that this guitar is a Gold Top Classic, but clearly it is factory made and finished. Murphy told me that when the Classic Plus models were being started that would grab whatever they wanted from production and turn them into whatever they became. So this guitar clearly has the LPR6 marking in the pick up cavity which is deep under the clear coat, but it's neither a Gold Top, as not all R6 guitars were Gold Top, but it is factory routed for the humbuckers, and as you mentioned not the p90's you would expect.

I never paid much attention to pre-historics but I do know the first digit, 2, is the year built and R6 stands for 1960. What I read here, anyways...

If it's a 60s classic or classic plus any ideas on what it's worth?

I think its a LP Classic from 1992. Some of them had great tops. Buy it if you like it. You'll know whether its any sort of R6 as soon as you get your hand around the neck. Those Classics have skinny necks that no one would ever confuse with a Reissue.

Something odd is going on here. Back in the day, especially in 1992, the very definition of an R6 was a goldtop with P90s. This guitar looks to me to be a 1992 Classic, modified just enough, but you can't really deny the serial number font is totally of "Classic" origin and typical of the model...not of pre-historics or the Custom Shop historics that came soon after.

I could be wrong, but I always thought the term "LPR6" (shorthand for Les Paul Reissue 1956) originated when the Gibson Custom Shop came out with the Historic Reissue line in '93. And if that's the case, how could this guitar be an LPR6? They didn't exist yet!

The SN font looks right for a '92 pre-historic. But the first number after the space has no special meaning. Pre-Historics were simply called Reissues and I believe it was always implied that they were '59 reissues.

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody mistakenly thought it was a '56' Reissue based on the first number after the space (6), and hand wrote LPR6 in the pickup cavities.

Besides, as it's already been pointed out... that guitar in no way resembles a '56 Les Paul. Humbuckers weren't even used until 1957.

Anybody can write R6 in the pup cavity...

Wonder what the big scribbly mess next to it use to say.....

That is a Classic, not a R6.
