Hi

I just acquired what I believe from research here is one of the 1995 fall premium olus limited editions with the hand rubbed finish and translucent colors. The serial number say 1996 and everything matches up

There is something about the color that is confusing me. There were 5 top colors and the backs of all but the blue were brown from what I see

Mine looks like it had a blue first coat on the top and then brown over that. Instead of dark brown with a lighter brown it is dark brown with blue. The back is absolutely the translucent blue.

The neck pickup cavity says "blu" and "a-dye" and the bridge cavity says LPPP

Here's the real kicker. Under the bridge and end piece and on a little spot on the cutaway there is also blue showing on the top.

The guitar was sitting in a music store probably untouched since 1996. Could it be that it was in some kind of light that bleached out the blue?

I put a note in at Gibson to see if they could tell me how it shipped. It has been a few days if I hear from them I'll post that

I'm really just curious we bought this because it is beautiful, plays great sounds great and was an amazing price. There's almost no way I would part with it.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate the information

Thanks very much
Bob

I couldn't get decent pictures of the color at night after work. I'll take some this weekend outside and post them.

Thanks.

Weather did not cooperate with sunshine but I tried to get some photos that show the blue on the front and the back.

I included one of the next pickup cavity where it says "blu" and "A-DYE".

The S/N picture is blurry, the s/n is "6 0671"

thanks again for any information

Bob

Gibson confirmed it was trans blue when shipped so this is what blue looks like bleached out by some king of light

I'm not nuts about colored tops so I'm pretty happy with the result and I'm also not crazy about the brown back it would have had if shipped brown so this worked out very well for me.

Thanks

I wonder if the "A-dye" stands for aniline dye. Maybe that accounts for the fading?

Thats what I'm thinking. I dont know much about that dye im going to research when i can. Weird though that it bleached darker. Where did the dark brown come from? I have used dark colors under dark blue when staining leather to make the blue show better so maybe this is the same principal.

My lousy pictures don't do it justice. I'll try and get some good pictures and post a hello message

Les Paul Forum

A great article by Mike Slubowsky on the Custom Shop and the limited Edition versions of the Classic Premium Plus.

I would bet yours is simply faded.

Thanks. I originally found this Les Paul Classic Premium Plus
Which it turns out let me do a pretty accurate identification because only one of the fall 1995 limited edition models had a blue back. As a complete LP neophyte I wasn't about to believe myself without expert reinforcement.

Reading on this site I am also learning about the fine art of fading the instruments. Very interesting stuff to learn. I wonder if anyone intentionally faded one of these blue models? This one was sitting in a music store for 16 years. The "blue spot" picture shows some blue left that looks like the shape of one of their price tags.
