I'm getting tired of the tube amp. Love the tones; nothing better, but tube amps are very dynamic. I've been playing a boutique amp for almost a year and it seems like one thing after another, mostly tube failure.

Anyway, I'd really like to get a solid state that is as close to the tube amp clean tone and crunch as possible.

Thanks

Patrick

Hey what about a Tech 21 or a Kustom Quad?

Lots of info needed. You are an experienced tube amp user so you know what you want. Is this baby to be for gigging? Home only? Light weight? Budget?
Best sounding modern SS I have personally tried was a cheap(ish) Hiwatt Maxwatt 100 1 x 12 combo. I played it straight after a Hiwatt Valve half stack so my ears were a bit spoilt. Even so, it impressed me as a great small gigging amp with good clarity on the cleans and not too fizzy on the drive channel. It looked well built and able to stand up to a lot of hard work.

My vote would be for a Marshall AVT50. It does have 1 pre-amp tube, but they last years. The AVT has warm, tube like cleans and a great versatile drive channel with plenty of gain on tap. I gigged with mine years ago before I got into all tube half stacks. If you get a combo version they are also capable of driving a couple of 4x12's.
Definately worth checking out if you can find one.

VOX Valvetronix Hybrid - It does have a tube, but is a 12ax7 and should last years...

An 80's BK Butler REALTUBE MOSVALVE - It does have 2 tubes, but they are 12ax7's and should last years...

Patrick, what is the tube amp that you've tired of? ALL tube amps that are properly designed and built will last a lifetime. It's not uncommon to find tube amps from the 60's/70's that still have original tubes.

I perform live with a Tech21 Trademark 60. See my vids in my signature.

I have sold tons of them, every studio that I record in has bought one, too!

It's the main amp that we demo guitar in in the shop, it's easy to use and sounds great.

Plenty of good suggestions here. I'll add the Vox Pathfinder 15R to the mix. Great sounding little guy, if you like Vox.

Roland--check out a bunch of Rolands.

Got to agree....

A few months back I was checking out the market for a new amp, I don't gig and this was for home use only, I thought I had my search narrowed down to the Marshall Class 5 or the Blackstar HT5, both great amps btw, but after a bit more searching I eventually settled for the Roland Cube X20.

It's well made, got some real nice cleans and some good built in effects, and I saved myself a few quid as an added bonus, check them out, you wont be disappointed...

If you can get your hands on an older Marshall 3210 MOSFET, they're pretty good. 100 watts, great crunch tones, and certainly not a sterile amp. They were made in the mid to late 80's.

This will be for home and small blues jams for around town. I want to clarify that I say tubes for lack of a better description. I don't know the tech part so everything is "tube" related. Thanks for some great suggestions. I was leading towards a Roland, but really have a lot more to think about.

Peavey TransTube Bandit 112. The best Full-SS amp there is out there. It's a nice sized combo, and is fully featured. Has a cool simulated Reverb too.
