GFS pups are great! Really great value for the money. I have a few of their models, and I'm very happy with them.

I currently use their Crunchy Pat humbucker in the bridge of a an old Aria Pro II "The Cat" guitar.Great for heavy rock, punk, that kinda thing. Quite hot ceramic pickup. Great EQ for my taste! I've had both the SD SH-6 Distortion and the SH-4 JB in the same axe, and I much prefer the GFS!

Then I have a P-90 soapbar set in the guitar in my sig. The only P-90's I have any real experience with, so I can't compare them to other brands/models. I do like them a lot though, and I see no need to replace them.

Then there's a few sets I lying around which I haven't tried yet.

A set of ProTube (Danelectro Lipstick style) humbuckers for a Baritone I'm currently building, a Lil' Killer single coil sized humbucker for an electric ukulele project, and finally a Jazz Bass set for bass project. :thumb:

If you want to try something to yield the best of both worlds pull the ceramic magnet out and replace it with a Alnico 5 for a more HOT vintage tone, if you want the pups true heat and have the Alnico warmth try an Alnico 8 magnet in it. You`ll be surprised how quickly you would find that be to be your go-to pup.

Skynyrd's on the money...in fact, I have the very A8 magnet he was speaking of, had it in a GFS VEH pickup in the bridge position of one of my Les Pauls. SCREAMER, would stand nose-to-nose with a Super Distortion and not blink(yet only an 11.2k wind)....but ended up swapping it out in favor of an unoriented rough-cast A5 magnet(yep, Addiction-FX). Full-on Pearly Gates action.

Same guitar, using the GFS Classic II in the neck position...comparable to the SD Slash pups.

Ended up with the GFS V59 Skynyrd had, he pulled it in lieu of using the GFS Pro Series set he picked up...it currently resides in the bridge of my SVK thinline/Custom Tele.

Jay and the gang at GFS are a great bunch to deal with, always coming out with new stuff at a great pricepoint..some mainstream, some of it stuff that the big names don't fool with..just waiting on them to bring out a "staple" A5 P-90.

I've got a Alnico II and a 'Retro-tron' in my jazz guitar, both coil split. I really like them; the neck pickup is warm, yet clear, and the bridge pickup has a really nice growl to it.

I did have a 'dream 90' in another guitar, and that wasn't very good at all.

While the OP has probably made his decision on his pickups already judging by the date of this thread, I'm gonna throw in my 2 cents in case someone references this thread in the future.

I purchased a very highly modified Flying V off of Craigslist some years back

It was actually a very cool little guitar, I just couldn't get into playing V's though. Anyways... The guitar came with a set of GFS pickups. I was most certainly pleased with them. They were very articulate, and chimey. They made the V sound really quite nice. If I had a choice between GFS and any Gibson or Fender OEM pickup, I would go with the GFS's. I'm not saying they are the best, but they are very nice and if they produce the sound you want, then for all intensive purposes, they can be the best for you.

I use their hottest set of humbuckers, the crunchy rails, in my DMXG. Excellent pickups for the price.

i got a matching set of their alnico fat pats on clearance to put in my les paul. definitely opened the sound up a bit from the stock epi pickups in there and it has a little bit "sweeter" midrange that is super great. I added a coil split when i put them in too. very versatile guitar now. does everything i want it to!
