This may be a silly question, but is it possible to use a head on a combo amp by simply plugging into the "power amp in" jack on the back? That should bypass the amp's preamp and simply use the power amp and speakers, causing the head to be the preamp, no? If that's the case is there anything to consider when specing a head to work in conjunction with a combo amp?

I use my Blackstar HT-5RH head with my Blackheart Handsome Devil Combo's speaker. So... I slave the speaker on my Combo to my Blackstar Head, but I don't have my Blackheart amp on at all, because that would be bad not having a speaker plugged in while turning the amp on.

You don't want to come out of a head's speaker out and plug that into anything on another amp I'm thinking. You may be able to come out of the effects loop out on the head and go to the effects loop in of another amp. I would think you would want to keep the head in standby, to not engage the power amp, since no speakers would be hooked up to it.

If you're thinking of going from power amp output to ANY input... Don't do it.

No,you can't.The only way you can do it is to come out of the head line out, preamp out,or effects send.you cannot use speaker out to anything other then a speaker.and you'll need a load on the speaker out of the head via a speaker or load box of some type.Don't do it if your not sure what you are doing, you'll blow them up as in TOAST!!Most amps will produce no sound in stanby mode other then the Blackstar that is.

Yeah. This will only work with connecting the preamp out / effect loop send of the head to the poweramp in / effect loop receive of the combo.

So what do you do about a speaker load for the head?

Yes.

Amp A's preamp out (FX Send) ---> Amp B's poweramp in (FX Return)

Plug your guitar to Amp A's input.

If Amp A is a tube amp, make sure you plug a speaker to it (or dummy load) so that its output transformer won't die.

I've gotten the best tone using my head's "line out" jack for going into the front end of another amp. A bit of a problem if you don't have a "line out" jack, however.

Yuo can always buy a Weber load box if you don't have line out.

Depends on the head. If it's something that requires a load, you'd have to do something like have a dummy load, but you should also be able to hook it up to an extra cabinet, since there shouldn't be any sound going to it.

Something like my Blackstar doesn't require a load. But I think that's more of an exception.

So I have a question.

Is it possible to run a "external speaker out" to a line in on my Mbox? ...or would I toast my tube amp?
