Petrucci plays a 7 string?

Yep, not all the time, but on a significant amount of Dream Theatre songs he plays either a baritone or 7-string guitar. Music Man even makes 7-string versions of his guitar models:

There are quite a few prog metal players who play 7 & 8-string guitars. Most 7-string players nowadays, are not nu-metal players.

Scale The Summit (Chris Letchford is a longtime 7-string player):

8-strings are also cool - I've debated off and on about getting one for the past few years, but my big concern is that every time I play one, It ends up sounding like a hybrid of guitar and bass playing. Besides, I have a severe nickel allergy, and a major allergy to chromium (which is used to make stainless steel), both of which have caused me mega dermatitis in the past. It's bad enough that I had to get my guitars refretted with nickel free, and stainless steel free frets, but there are also only two product lines of electric guitar strings I've found (Rotosound British Steels, and Ernie Ball Cobalts [what I use]), that are both nickel and stainless steel free, out of the 200 plus product lines. I can get Ernie Ball Cobalts in 7-string sets, but that's it. 8-string sets? Forget it, they're not out there, and I'd have to roll a custom set, using a bass string for the 8th string (which won't fit right in a guitar tuning machine post's string hole). So, no 8-string for me. Still, I do want another 7-string.
