Hi there. I recently bought a GFS pro series pickup for my Epi LP's bridge pickup. If you're going straight from Epiphone stock pickups, it's definitely an improvement. I don't know if I'd consider them PAF replicas, but very nice for what you're gonna be spending, and a definite upgrade from stock Epi pickups.

Upgrade?
What do you have now that you are replacing with $40 pickups?

Well, what would be an upgrade then?

Don't let price be a factor in determining "upgrade" just because it's 40.00 doesn't mean it's not an improvement. Too many people think the more you pay for a pickup the better it is. Like I mention before a person winding a pickup in China or a person winding a pickup for Seymour Duncan it really doesn't matter if they do it correctly. People tend to call 'Chinese/Korean' etc made items crap and sub par (because of counterfeiter), but if the same person winding pickups in China/Korea is now working at Seymour Duncan then it's becomes a great p'up.

I understand, and I think these WOULD be an improvement. I listened to some clips of them and they sound great. Of course, it's just youtube clips and they're not a real 100% representation of the true sound but it's close.

When it comes to p'ups to me it's a hit or miss. You might hear something that sounds great on youtube or clips, order that p'up, install it, play it, and be disappointed.

Check with Aleksandar (Wizz Pickups) for an intra-state discount ;)

Or, conversely, get in touch with Rayne (MHD Pickups) or any number of the stellar winders who post here. Tell them what you you're seeking.

For $150 or less, you should try out Tonerider pickups. Their pickups are well made and sounds really good. Andrew from Tonerider is a nice guy too, communicates really well. To me their best set of PAF type pickups would be the Tonerider Alnico IV Classics Set which uses Alnico 4 magnets. It has clarity, lots of bite and yet warm, not muddy at all. The Alnico II set is pretty ok too but a tad mushier compared to the Alnico 4 set. There are other models as well but the Alnico 4 set gets my vote as the best sounding PAF type humbucker compared to the other Tonerider humbuckers. I had the Seymour Duncan 59 pickups before, they were good sounding but they lack character and warmness compared to the Tonerider Alnico 4 set (tone is very subjective and personal). Here's Tonerider's website, check it out, there are some sound clips that you can listen to as well... :)

Tonerider - Welcome

For $150, I'd be looking at Toneriders, Dimarzio 36ths, or, most likely, a pair of Zhangbuckers.

I've never liked GFS stuff personally. Stew Mac makes a really nice set of humbuckers for like $100. I like them way better than Toneriders .... Tonerider bridge was VERY bright IMO. I thought I had it wired wrong, but others said the same. Also look out for SD jazz/59'ss... got a whole set for $75 used. Right now I got Fralins in there which I "stole" for like $125 for the set. They aren't going anywhere.

For 65 bucks google Giovanni GVH-1. I have a set in a 335 copy and they are super nice.
