A couple months back guitar aficionado ran an article about this, i believe it is called the Lacey act, perhaps someone here knows more about as I don't have the article handy. I personally don't blame Gibson. The overall theme of the article was how "saving trees is killing the guitar industry." I love nature. I go hiking and camping, but I honestly feel like most of the people that are up in arms over this are going to far. Pretty soon environmentalists won't allow beer companies to import hops from certain regions of the world because its bad for the environment. Just my two cents.

While i don't agree with certain aspects of the Lacey act as well as some of the tactics the tree huggers employ to make certain areas off limits to loggers there is something to be said IF gibson knowingly purchased woods from a off-limit type/country then they are going to pay dearly.

Just because you do not agree with the laws does not mean you are going to break them as a way of expressing your discontent. The reason why the FBI raided Gibson HQ was to gather up the computers that might have the evidence indicating that Gibson knowingly purchased these goods. Im sure the DA is going to insure he has the evidence and a case before he issues out indictments

I wouldn't consider myself an eco-nut - I work at a nuclear power plant after all - but being intelligent with our resources simply makes good sense. When there is a profit in something it is too often over-harvested. The little bit of research I've done on this topic gave a far different picture than what is being painted here.

There are laws out there for a reason, and I don't think they have anything to do with putting limits on our fun. Gibson simply needs to abide by them rather than trying to find a way around them. Being one who enjoys the great outdoors - what little I get to see of it since I'm working horrendous hours and still working on my bachelor's degree - I for one would rather see our environment last a lot longer than every guitarist having a BRW (or whatever) fretboard.

Thankfully, the feds aren't targeting hops. So we are safe in fact, the obligatory after work brew is calling. :D

God forbid there is an endangered slug that lives in the one of those trees and we won't ever see it again. Oh how horrible. How will the society and the people of madagascar survive? Don't invest all those man hours into getting drugs off the streets...hunting down illegal tree harvesters is a much better way to spend the taxpayers dollars.

Getting drugs off the streets is a colossal waste of taxpayers money.

The point here is that it's a dwindling resource, and at the rate these forests are being harvested, they will be gone in no time. You all did see that a mature rosewood tree is about 250 years old. You can't just plant them like evergreens, and cut them down 2 years later.

Another problem is that many of the residents just don't give a sh*t about whether they obliterate all of Madagascar's rosewood and ebony trees. The same thing happens with rhinos and elephants in Africa, due to poachers - even inside wildlife refuges, and people get killed over it. You should see how many acres of Amazon rainforest are destroyed each year due to converting the land to grow beef for McDonald's hamburgers.

Man's selfishness knows no bounds, and there is always a tipping point where you can't undo fully destroying something or killing off species of plants/animals.

Its simple...population control. Too many rats in the cage. We need a Near Extinction Event to cull the herd. The earth will eventually shake us off like fleas and some other animal will take over...or the Sun will go supernova and it all ends.

That is where World Wars come into play. Wars bring population control and money.

What good are the trees going to do for the people of Madagascar if they are not cut down and sold?
Will it make the newly planted trees grow faster?
Will it make some bleeding heart Liberal happy siting in their house on the other side of the planet?

Running out or not harvesting them is the same outcome for the people that need money to buy food.

Make no mistake the trees would be cut down without Gibson in the mix.

Sorry boys, but some of you are displaying incredible ignorance in terms of the ecoSYSTEM. It's a SYSTEM, not freestanding entities. Look at what's happening with foreign animal introduction and the loss of species in certain areas in terms of what it does to our ability to farm and produce food for an increasing population. Corporations do not have a right to destroy the planet to enhance the bottom line at the expense of the rest of the world. We can make guitars out of other woods.

If wood is renewable, sure, harvest it, replant. However, we can't go one detroying the environments that are home to the incredible variety of species that inhabit places like rainforests. You can't just replant and repopulate them once they're gone.

Species of plant an animal life are disappearing at an alarming rate annually. Some of them hold the keys not only to a functioning ecosystem, but to curing human diseases. I'll give you just one example: "Big" cats don't get lukemia. "Small" Cats do. Two branches of a very DNA related group of animals and one gets lukemia, the other doesn't. The secret to curing lukemia is in their genes - and yet we are systematically wiping out the large cat groups by destroying their habitat. Maybe when someone you love comes down with the disease you will finally have the insight to understand how we should treat the planet and it's species.

Get a clue, our survival depends on it.
