Years ago at work I was required to have a walkie talkie type phone and it drove me to thinking of kicking cats and smacking puppies.

I have one, but I only turn it on if I need to call someone (emergency), or I'm at the store trying to find some crazy thing my wife wants me to pick up. We have a landline with an answering machine to answer all calls. If it's important, I'll call 'em back, on my time.

I have a cell phone and dropped my home service, but I'm not a face in my phone kind of person at all. I don't like talking on the phone, and I'm not into using it as entertainment and I only text occasionally with my sisters but overall I just use it when I have to. I have Virgin Mobile for $40 a month and I feel like I'm paying too much. The phone companies force you into certain plans because they offer a low low price with almost no minutes or a higher price with too many, and nothing in between. The low cost plan will cost big time if you go over so they play you whether you like it or not.

I hated that I can't live without my cell phone. Good for you!
Every time the cell rings, I have these anxious feelings, like something bad is going to happen...

I need mine if I want to continue to work for the same company.

We used to have beepers. Remember those?

Anyone else feel the same way out there? iv'e had cell phones before but i always end up tossing it to the side, the constant buzz of useless phone calls or text messages just don't appeal to me sometimes you just want to be left alone. Sure they come in handy for an emergency but seems like every where i go (work Etc.) there is a phone i could use, and people know how to get a hold of me if they need to. and besides think of the money you spend each month, That could make for a pretty nice Les Paul fund!! :naughty:
You lucky bastid!
I was made redundant years ago and told that I wouldn't even get an interview unless I had a mobile ('cell' to you colonial philistines) phone.
Now my employer provides me with one that I keep with me 24/7.
*sigh*
Remember the good old days when you could piss off to the country and no sob would be able to reach you?

When we were still carrying 'brick' phones around and the likes of Nokia were about to launch mini phones, someone offered me the chance to have a percentage interest in the development of the mobile phone market in the U.K.
Won't go into the whys and wherefores.
Will just share with you that I refused.
One of my more annoying investment decisions.
I just couldn't see (and still can't) why anyone would want to contactable twenty four hours a day.

I HATE THEM!
Would happily go back to having no mobile phones in the world tomorrow.
Actually I quite like the idea of having carrier owls, like they do in Harry Potter.
Much prefer an owl.
Or a raptor (I hear there is still some discussion on whether to regard an owl as a raptor).

I have to be reachable (kids) and there are occasionally important emails that need replies during the day. It's set to "do not disturb" from 7AM - 7PM so only people from favorites list can actually ring through, anyone else goes straight to voicemail.

At work, we call them our "leashes." And, yes, unfortunately, we are expected to answer them if they ring...24/7.

They tried that crap where I work. They wanted us available and on call 24/7 - weekends too. On OUR phones, because they wouldn't provide them either. BUT they refused to pay us... being on call means you can't do some things... go out of town, go fishing, get hammered, whatever. We (I as the union guy at the time) told them if they don't pay, we don't play. They dropped it. If they want you 24/7 then they need to PAY 24/7.

Company phones can and are being used to track employees by GPS.

They'll find your GPS location to be where you shouldn't be by what you said, ask you about where you were nonchalantly, and catch you lying.

Once that happens, you are marked.

Not me, but seen it first hand.

I find washing your phone in the clothes washer is the surest way of not having one anymore.

I hear ya. I don't see the need to be constantly blabbing to people. Other than emergencies and important family or work business, I don't think they are that big of a deal.

Don't own one. If my life becomes so busy or hectic that I've got to take or make calls when I don't have access to a land line (possibly dwindling in numbers), that's a life I don't want to live.
