2nd hand Peavey ValveKing would be my suggestion but it depends what sort of music you want to play.

Get out and try different ones , 22-50 watts of tube amp should do it.Less if you are going through a P.A. system will do also.
If you have O.D. Pedals you do not need an amp with a dirt (O.D.)second or third channel IMO, but seem hard to find without in your price range. Save a few bucks get a slightly used amp. As stated though by Eggy (Ben) what do you play , no amp right now?

The Peavey Classic 30 or 50 should work out,

I know GC was getting rid of em during Christmas for $400 and you can find them for as low as $300 used.

A non tube amp or Solid state and modelling amp is an amp that tries to mimic the sounds of a tube amp.
They're low priced, easy to use and can be pretty versatile. However many of them clip harshly when turned up and can make bad gigging amps.

A tube amp sounds better as you turn it up and can last a long time. It's not as versatile sometimes but it gets louder, sounds better and it better for your situation IMHO.

50 "tube" watts is more than enough.

Also if you plan on turning the map up and using it in big gigs I would only consider tube. (there are some exceptions of course but you'll want something that isn't too big and sounds good turned up)

BTW the Peavey Classic should cover most of the styles you want, it's a pretty versatile amp with nice cleans and great for anything up to hard rock. With a pedal you could use it for a lot of styles.

crate has a great line of tube amps. it's called the v series. i own a crate v-33 it's all class A tube power and 33watts. 2x12 inch speakers and 4 el84's and 3 12ax7's. it has a really good tube sound. people need to give these crate amps a try because they sound better then peavy amps in my opinion. i play christian rock and need a good clean and overdrive sound and this amp does it really well + it was only $400.
remember 33watts of class A is louder then 30 watts class A/B in the peavy classic 30.

You should also check out the Carvin X-100B. You can pick up a half stack used for around $600. They are very sweet for the price. :)

class a means all the tubes are running at one time. vox amps are class A and use four el84's and fenders are class A/B. fenders have four el34's and usually only two run at a time. each pair of power tubes takes turns running so they dont get to hot. vox amps have all the power runing through all the power tubes at all times wich gives you a chimey sound. the crate amps are based off the vox's. if you like the edge's clean tone from u2 you should consider the crate v-33. when you distort it, it sounds real british. overdrive sounds like a ts808 tubescreamer. id be happy to explain anything else.:fingersx:

I am a big fan of my Marshal TLM2000 DSL 401

Some have overheating issues, but mine is great. I got it used for $450 or so and it has a really nice clean channel and a kick ass dirty channel with a 3rd super overdrive channel for more modern stuff.

check em out if you can. I think it is 40watts

Yeah I tried a Palomino V32 once and it was amazing. Very warm classic rock-ish cleans. Couldn't try the gain channel on it but it was a pleasant amp.
