Steve, see my above post. If you eat clean and exercise, you will absolutely lose weight 10 lbs. 7 times over if you are that out of shape. Again, Exercise and follow the simple "don't eat THAT dumbass" diet, and you can call it what you like. If you stick to it, you will lose weight. It's not THAT particular diet that's at play....it's dieting in general.
The bloodwork I have been made privy to disagrees with you.

Define cleaner... my normal breakfast is either bacon or sausage and eggs....lots of it.

This is where the line between weight loss and healthy are crossed. Eggs, have at it. Bacon....define A LOT. Is it 2-4 strips/links? Even that is A LOT, but go past that, and the sodium in the diet is just not good. But sure, bacon or sausage isn't too bad. You don't need to go "turkey bacon", but, lean cuts are best.

And how can you prove that THAT particular diet is the cause of the good blood work? I would contend that my "don't eat that dumbass" diet would give you the same result.....or better.

That's true, but you also have to remember that muscle burns more calories at rest than fat. So it is essential to maintain some amount of muscle.
Of course...but what about a guy like me who wrecked his back lifting and CAN'T really exercise much anymore. And walking is excellent exercise for fat loss (not cardio). You are correct on one thing....if you have a pear shaped body and all you do is cardio....you will have a smaller pear shaped body.

Well then by all means show me the results of your diet. I know what I know....not gonna argue for the sake of argument.

I'm 49 and have followed my "common sense" diet for decades. I'm 5'8", 158 lbs.. My resting heart rate is 58, blood pressure 105/62 (last doc's visit), my cholesterol is a combined 146. Triglycerides are also in the normal-excellent range. I run 2-4 miles at lunch time on most days, and can still hop on a motocross track and run a 20-30 min. moto.

That diet worked for you because you were, I'm sure, eating WAY worse than before you started it. Right?

The blown out back thing....that sucks. My joints feel it a little with age from all of the dirtbiking, but, I just do what doesn't hurt. A lot of bodyweight stuff....pull ups, push ups, etc.. I don't go for max bench anymore.

The fact of the matter is, a very large percentage of DIETS fail, and when the weight goes back on, it's worse than having not lost it in the first place. Many diets aren't sustainable, realistically.

With my work schedule, the band, my daughter.....I can do 8 out of 10 days. 2 days out of 10 I might find myself at a gig eating a cheeseburger and having a few drinks. Maybe I'm out with my daughter, and I get an ice cream with her. No matter, it's o.k.. I'm not going for Mr. Olympia. As we age, the main thing is to stay healthy and flexible with a strong core, and not carry a bunch of extra weight around that makes those ligaments and joints that much more vulnerable.

Changing your LIFESTYLE around to something bearable and sustainable is the best route to long term fitness and health.

Thanks for your contribution to the thread.
I'm changing to low carb / high fat for life. Therefore, it's not a diet -under the current meaning of the word- per se. One important factor that hasn't been mentioned is the psychological aspect. I lead a very busy professional life with loads of responsibilities and many, many hours worth of work plus busy family and social lives. As I stressed about work in the past, I tended to overeat (healthy stuff, mind you) so the weight increased over time making me feel frustrated. I was in good health overall but I could envisage possibly serious health issues in the future. Alcohol has never been an issue (e.g.I have about 3/4 drinks a year) as growing up with alcoholic relatives put me off it forever.

The Keto approach to nutrition has made me more focused, stabilised my blood sugar / insulin levels so I feel more energetic throughout the day and temptation to overeat has diminished drastically. I have never EVER been on a diet before and -as I said- I don't consider this to be a diet but a step in the right direction; in a way, going back in time to a more sensible way of eating that has proved effective before.

Did cyclical keto until 6 months ago for 2 years. Once you get past the lethargy, insomnia, & cravings its well worth it imo. My yearly flight physicals also went by with no problems except once for a false alarm where the doc found ketones in my urine and called me back for diabetic testing. Otherwise, bloodpressure/bloodwork was excellent and normal ekg. And dont overlook fiber.

Seconded. I'd go as far as saying that ALL diets fail. Only a lifestyle change will really have a long lasting impact.

I love bacon. Really love it. I went as far as replacing it with turkey bacon. I still eat real bacon a few times a year, but it's a rarity. Turkey bacon is nowhere near as tasty, let's be honest, but I'm nowhere near as heavy either. I was never fat but I was larger than I wanted to be.

Just my opinion, but the only way to make a real change is to make a permanent lifestyle change to both activity levels and eating habits.

You don't have to eat lettuce all day every day, but just make it a habit to make sensible substitutions.

I still eat junk now and then. I still eat chocolate now and then. Just far less of that shit than I used to and far more healthy food.

It took some discipline, but eventually it gets far easier.

Good luck man, sounds like you're on the right track.
Before and after shots are good too!

Good work guys.

I've been on weight watchers for 3-4 months, down from 245 to 220. 39 YO.

Keep at it! I feel much better. And my schlong is about 3/4" longer. ;)

This week I have lost nearly four pounds. I have been slightly more active physically as well. However, recently since going full keto (i.e. about 25 gms of carbs per day), I have experienced a slight change in mood. Some keto experienced people those symptoms are most down to electrolyte levels running low rather than low carb per se. Going to explore mineral supplementation.... any experience?

often calld the keto flu.....it is USUALLY very temporary. However the sudden flush of water ( 4 pounds in a week) can flush electrolytes. A vitamin/ mineral supplement is not a bad idea. Personally I get REALLY Bad leg cramps at night when I first start low carb.

Magnesium supplements kill my leg cramps. So does not abusing coffee. When I cut out coffee the cramps completely disappear. But I love my coffee even though it does not play well with all the water I drink throughout the day.

I had a week off work which meant spending more time with family and friends (good) but it also meant having some meals away from home (not good). One visit to KFC was a disaster: chips (fries) everywhere and poultry covered in breaded batter. Nightmare! Didn't have a single chip but I had to peel off the batter before eating the chicken. Not fun. Pizza Express a few days later. Of course, no pizza for me but even the salads are full of starchy/sugary veg and sauces. Bloody awful! Chinese restaurant next. Very nice, authentic food but all covered in carbs. You should have seen the face of the Chinese waiter when I declined eating rice or pancakes!!! Almost every meal was very high in obvious and hidden carbs.

I have found out that eating out and keto are not good companions. Also other people confuse my new attitude to nutrition with being fussy. :(

In short, due to last week's mishaps I have not lost a single gram this week. I'm hoping to be back on track soon.
