I'm sorry, but putting block inlays and split diamonds on a USA model does not make it a Custom. It's decisions like this by Gibson that having me scatching my head and saying: "WTF!?!?" Sorry, but in my mind, this cheapens the entire concept of what it means to have a "Custom."

Gibson's crack marketing team at it again.

Whatever.

Someone may have already said this but, I thought the "Custom" on the Les Paul Custom is for the double binding, block inlays, split diamond and bling in general etc that you don't get on the standard. It doesn't mean that they are custom made or from the custom shop (although I could be wrong, that's just how I've always thought it was).

I believe you are correct .
Here is what gibson has to say about what a CUSTOM is

the Les Paul Custom has always been a supremely elegant instrument—a “black tie” guitar for the formal crowd,

there is always so much butt hurt when Gibson comes out with a Custom that doesn't come from the custom shop .

It's too bad that some people will hate the Custom Lite forever, without ever having played one. Really, too bad - because it's such a nice playing and sounding guitar.
I had a 1987 Custom Lite and now I have the new one. I absolutely love it, and it is a 'real' Les Paul Custom. I suppose if it had a $4000 price tag, that argument would be rendered moot to a lot of people, but I don't know why it's priced so well. I mean, God forbid that Gibson puts multi-ply binding, split-diamond and block inlays on a guitar that's not $4000, right? It is what it is, and I'm very happy to have one.

I remember when these first came out in the late '80s and there was no Custom Shop back then, all Les Paul Customs were production guitars.

As the owner of a real Custom Shop 57 Black Beauty can I just say that I am not at all offended by this guitar. I have not played one but from what I have read here and elsewhere it is a nice guitar at an affordable price. The old companies Like Gibson and Martin have alway made inexpensive guitars alongside their high end models. Generally you are paying for more bling rather than a better sounding guitar. The curator of the Hard Rock Cafe says the best sounding guitar in the whole collection is Kossofs 57 junior. Here Gibson have made a blingy looking guitar that's available at a good price. Seems to me like a case of giving people what they want. Hard to argue against that.

Heh, not such a SMOOTH argument.

Like whats been repeated several times, the MODEL name is the LP custom.

Never dictated that it was made in the custom shop.

Just meant it was more bling'd out.

Ignorance is never a pretty color on anything/anyone. It is NO different from a studio/standard, except that the older ones had mahogany tops in place of the maple that is on the standard/studio

Hence, the midtown CUSTOM had all the same features of a midtown, but with bling.

I think the custom and studio lites are a great idea.

Dont like it? Dont buy it!

Just dont start dogging on them, because other people DO like them.

I own one. Mine is a 1988. I play it almost exclusively. I bought it in Jacksonville, Florida at Don's Pawn for $900 in 1993.

It is pretty sweet. There is only 1 tone knob but it has a switch in place of the other.

The switch gives it a weird but useful Strat like sound.

It is lighter than a normal custom but I swear it sounds just as good.

I play it through an Ampeg Reverberocket 212 and it sounds amazing.

Mine has a lot of issues. I have played it a ton. Currently it is noisy as hell. I found this forum because I cannot find a drop in wiring kit for this one.

If there is any interest I could post some pics of the wear and tear.
