That's how Gibson grades their tops. "A" being relatively plain/very little flame or figure, all the way up to "AAAA" (though I have seen some referred to as "AAAAA"), which are the highly-figured, flamed-tops (as seen on the LP Supreme).

The only bad thing is, Gibson's idea/opinion of anything over a "AAA" top is WAY different than most of ours.

Gibson grades the tops based on how decorative they look.

On the solid colour tops, they don't use the most decorative tops (since no one would see them!)

Makes no difference to tone, though....

Flame (The stripes going across the body)

Plain (No stripes going across the body, just normal grain, plain top)

Understand?

The GT and any painted top is going to be a plainer form of maple. While it doesn't sound any different, a lot of people appreciate the flamed tops and are willing to put out big bucks for them. Check the prices of today's Standards. This helps keep Gibson in business.

The grain doesn't make a difference, so there is no difference in sound between plain and flame tops.

Gold tops are typically plain tops but they can have flame tops hidden underneath them.
