My new J-45 arrived yesterday and it’s pretty f’ing cool.

I own a Martin OM-28V and 59 000-18 and a 74 Gibson SJ Deluxe. I’ve been wanting a J-45 for a while as it’s a classic and I knew it would be totally different than the acoustics I have.

I’ve read that part of the appeal of the J-45 is the way it tonally “sits” with a vocalist - doesn’t get in the way - and that a dry tone, bassy growl with a fast decay, is typically what one can expect from a good J-45. It’s all there and it’s a sexy beast. This is 2019-20 that I bought used and the former owner didn’t play it much, so I’m looking forward to it opening up as I play it more… like everyday for the rest of my life.

Congratulations, it should compliment the others you mentioned. I got one a little over a year ago and love it. My D41 provides a wonderful rosewood Martin tone and the J45 a wonderful mahogany Gibson tone - major bases covered for me. I hope you enjoy it for many years. Yours is extremely beautiful as well.

The bassy, mid-scooped tone from this guitar is really wild. So different than my Martins and really fun to play. It’s like it was built to be more of a strummer. Now, I get the J-45 thing.

Acoustic guitars really have their own voices. The J45 definitely has its own tone. I currently have my Seagull S6 (spruce top - got it several years ago 1/2 price when discontinued) out and enjoying it. It’s sort of round shouldered, but doesn’t really sound like a J45. I have some vacation time so will get out the J45 and D41 to enjoy over the holidays.

I ordered a Recording King 9 series dreadnought yesterday. Not in the same league with Gibson or Martin but it intrigued me so We’ll see.

About a month in on owning this guitar And playing it practically everyday. I‘ve changed out the tuners to new high ratio Waverlys, bone saddle and pins. Not because I had to; just because I wanted to. The Waverlys are great, smoother and lighter weight than the Grover’s and I think they look cool. The big bassy tone sure is addictive. I’m sure it will continue to “open up” some, but in my experience, that can take years. So I’m glad this one sounds good off the bat. This is definitely my most played guitar right now.
