I have a 490r in the neck and a pearly gates in the bridge on my 93 Classic. It works for me.

Don't know if you're open to other suggestions but I really like the Seymour Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge and '59 in the neck. In my opinion that's one of the best combos there is. I had a set once in a guitar with a mahogany body and maple top (basically like your Les Paul) and they could do anything from Eric Johnson to The Eagles to Boston to Van Halen. Mine were coil-tapped too.

Good luck!

You have great guitar. Now, the next most important thing here is good and certain amp. Pickups are not so relevant. People used to play jazz on electric guitars 60 years ago and hard rock 40 years ago with less defined pickups than you have or you can find at shop nearby. MHO is each guitar can play jazz and rock. It's the beat that separates music styles.
I have 498T/490R combo. 498T can play everything but Fender cleans. 490R is great neck pickup which can also be put in bridge position. Both are quality made as yours so just adjust p.u. height and the amp.

The pup combination on the Classic is 500T and 496R. They are high output ceramic pickups and are limited in the scope of styles they can "let through".

I don't agree with "Pickups are not so relevant", but that's a whole other set of threads! My '93 SG was very focused on certain freqs with the 498T but gained a lot of "soul and tone" and versatility when I replaced it with a SD '59.
