I have wanted to build a guitar for a while now and I have decided to build an SG. A friend of mine had a bunch of pine 2x4 planks; now I understand SG are usually mahogany but the wood was free. Not to mention this will most likely be a practice run.

So far I have cut out the body and have roughly cut out the pickup holes, neck slot, and rear electrical cavity (using a drill press). How do I smooth the holes out? I am assuming I have to buy a router bit or something.

And how do I build the neck? I'll post pics soon.

It can be done by hand if you are proficent with chisels and finger planes. It is much simpler with a router set up with pattern bushing and a guide template

You might want to check out other build threads for tips on building the neck. If you're making it out of one piece, it's important that it's quartersawn to avoid warping in the future. Basically it's just you get a block that's big enough to cut the neck out of, rough cut the profile and tenon, shape the tenon and heel using chisels, a rasp and a planer, shape the headstock with either a belt sander or by hand, and then profile the neck close with a rasp and finalize sanding by hand. If you don't have a big enough block and/or it's not quartersawn, you might want to laminate the neck out of multiple pieces. Some make a scarf joint at the headstock and glue a block to the heel end to make the heel and tenon out of, others laminate the neck block from three or more wide pieces running lengthwise.

A router only cuts. It's not for sanding. If you get the correct bits and cut properly the bottom will be flat. Usually where you would need the router doesn't need to be as smooth as a part that will be finished and glossy

Thanks a lot for linking those threads!

I've spent the whole evening reading those through, because I'm trying to start my SG(ish) project soon. (Actually the only thing that is keeping me from starting is that the plans I had were really sloppy and now I'm just waiting my new ones to arrive...)
