only for the fanbois who jack-off to the AFD album. :laugh2:

to some he's just another guitarist in a world full of millions of guitarists.

(I fully admit I'd fanboi over James Hetfield, however)

Hey, I jack off to Use Your Illusion! AFD is overrated, frankly.

Access. During Zep's heyday they toured constantly, which meant that at any given time Jimmy was either

1) Onstage
2) Wasted
3) Banging groupies
4) Wasted and banging groupies
5) Wasted onstage
6) On the plane (probably wasted)

He never banged a groupie while onstage wasted? Huh, you think you know somebody...

Okay, I'll admit I did not read this whole thread because...well, because "Slash".

So, I may not be the first to point this out: All this means is that Gibson/Epiphone will be marketing more "Slash" signature guitars. Slash will get paid for not really doing anything more than lending is name to a few more guitars.

In all fairness, he has had a few decent guitars from these brands attributed to his "input". I don't have any nor do I have any interest in any of them, but again...Slash.

I've never really understood the appeal of his guitar prowess.

He played a replica. Pretty much covers it.

His replica didn't say "Replica" on the headstock. I always thought it was a Gibson guitar until I did a research into Les Paul guitars. I'm sure most non-guitar-nerd people still think that.
Either way, that replica was a replica of Gibson Les Paul, not a Telecaster or anything. It was so good precisely because the luthier tried to reproduce a Gibson guitar.
Finally, as far as I know, even Slash himself sticks to Gibson guitars. That should be enough.

I can't help but wonder why Page doesn't generate this kind of response. Think it's an accessibility thing? In Zeppelin's hay day if you wanted to see Jimmy you needed to buy Creem or Hit Parader. Wanna see Slash? Turn on the television. He probably reaches far more people via TV than Page ever did.

There's that. Slash is also just a much more relevant guitarist to today's audience. Page's heyday was 40-50 years ago, and his last tour was over 15 years ago. To many people, myself included, he's a ghost and essentially a legend that may or may not have even existed rather than a ground, working guitarist. Whereas Slash has been touring regularly for ages and is currently headlining the most successful concert tour of the year.

If only there was some badass relevant guitarist that used Gibson guitars and has been rocking like a mofo for 30 years, writing great songs, and touring pretty constantly,..that could help promote Les Pauls,...

oh wait...

There's no way Henry could ever pull Hetfield away from ESP.

Slash might be a cold dude and he can play rings around me....but I wouldn't want to sound like him under any circumstances.

Gnr is a very successful band amongst a very narrow subset of the music listening public. I'm not in that group. I find them to be at the very least As ridiculous as the current iteration of kiss.

And as much as Slash and Duff are the coolest elements of gnr...it's still a horribly myopic and short sighted choice by henry j.

And Metallica started sucking the minute cliff burton died.

Do you think Hetfield would embrace or even entertain the possibility of being a Gibson "Ambassador?"

Most casual listeners (non-musicians) would probably consider him a lead singer first and a guitarist as a distant second. Not saying that thinking is either fair or even valid, but I'd be willing to consider that as a general consensus. Outside of the hard rock/metal genre, I suspect the average man on the street couldn't even name 2 guitarists that are part of Metallica. Christ, the band took enough crap getting haircuts about a decade ago, I can just imagine how this perceived selling out to commercialism would go over among their fan base.

For that matter, I would probably put Ted Nugent up as a stronger possibility than JH.

to each their own of course. I'd be more willing to say I like LP's because of Hetfield instead of Slash.

But there's of course a ton of people who like them because of Slash.

I just think Hetfield is cooler because I think Metallica is cooler. :laugh2: And that Iron Cross LP he has is BA.

Brand ambassadors are common. There are pro tennis (any sport really) players who are global brand ambassadors for luxury watchs/cars so why wouldn't Slash be one for Gibson? Slash is a very famous guitar player who mostly plays Gibson guitars (and is very well know for Les Pauls). It surprises me very little and bothers me even less.

I thought he was already?

I don't mind Slash - plenty of better players around, but I can get down with most songs he is involved in (from GnR through to the conspirators).

IMO Gibson have plenty of problems, but Slash isn't one of them. If they think he can save them forever though, they might get disappointed. Ambassadors don't generally do that (I actually don't know what they do - :) )

Nuge is far too divisive to be an ambassador for anything. He might even help to tank sales because he's so irritating to too many people.
