If you're buying at GC, try several before deciding on the one. I played the one hanging on the wall the other day and while it sounded great, I did not like the the feel so much. There was a pronounced ridge where the white paint butted up to the edge of the fretboard, frets had sharp ends, etc. Gibson lets a lot of BS get out the door.
Picked up the SG classic nearby, sounded the same, but had a MUCH better feel. Neck profile was the same, but it felt silky and smooth.

Well, the new SG is on it's way back. 2 main issues:

1. Cracked neck/body joint around the entire joint area of the neck. Not just a finish flaw, if you apply pressure, it opens up...

2. Stain/nitro line runs down both sides of the neck parallel to the fretboard, does not come off short of scraping it off.

F#ck it!

Wow, I was planning on just lurking and reading this thread, but tht is just ridiculous on Gibson's part. I know they let a few questionable ones slip out sometimes, but that should've been b-stocked immediately.

Sorry for the bad luck man

Oh dear, thats really frustrating. The pink stuff down the side might just be polish. Mine had unremoved polish on it when new.

The stuff on the sides of the neck is actually yellowish/brown, looks like stain or something from the fretboard. It is definitely taped in a straight line, I think a trimmer/finisher forgot to finish this one. The neck crack makes this a moot point, however....

that didnt look like polish, more like a poor tape job...

I don't know who, but there was one guy here that bought one and said it sucked - worst feeling/quality Gibson he ever experienced.

Its got bad mojo.. Don't do it..

Hoping not to seem pedantic, but what you are calling bad mojo is known to practitioners of Voodoo as juju... both terms rise from that particular religion, as it happens.

I only told you that so you wouldn't seem like a tourist if you ever ended up in Haiti or New Orleans...

Update - Update

The replacement came in a couple of days ago *without* the crack at the neck/body joint, and without the stain lines running down the neck parallel to the fretboard.

Plays like a dream!!! Resonates like no other guitar I own, including my other SG (brown faded with crescent inlays). She's a keeper, but it needs a bit of a setup work down to take care of some sharp fret ends and the nut needs some attention...

(...don't they all?)

:naughty:

Update:

Ok, so this whole thing just gets sillier and sillier by the day....

So I got the new guitar, the second one, because the first one had the cracked neck and stain line running down the fretboard

...and the second one arrived without the "cracked neck/body joint" option!!

<There was much rejoicing>

Well, then I noticed that the fret ends were pretty sharp and that the nut was pretty high, so I talk to my guy at Sweetwater and tell him about that, and (long story short) the service folks there agreed to cover the cost of the repairs at the local Luthier I use which is a Gibson repair/service center. Pretty awesome, huh?!!!

<There was much rejoicing>

I get a call today from the tech who's working on the SG asking me if I ever tried using the neck pickup? I replied that I don't think I really did, I just kept it in bridge pickup mode and jammed that way, since I only had it for a day or so. So he says he'll trace it some more to see what may be up, and (another long story short), it looks like the the neck PU is toast. "Luckily" (and I use that term loosely), they are Gibson authorized, so they're going to get the PU covered and installed under warranty, so it will cost me nothing.

Getting a solid guitar really should *NOT* be this difficult!!! ...But on the flip-side of this, it really does play nicer than any SG I've played before, and I dig the P90 ...at least the bridge P90!

:wtf:
