I started driving at 14...

Where's my cookie?!?

they put us to work the second we could work the steering wheel on the tractor. When we got where we were headed, we just cut it off because we couldn't reach the pedals to actually brake it. When I took driver's ed, i got to drive for maybe half an hour out of a weekend because the instructor said I knew enough, he wanted to give the other drivers a chance. Had to sit in the back of a f-ing taurus for darn near three days while two other kids tried to kill us and our instructor broke open and ate peanuts. I still will forever hate jerry curls because of him.

Being a teen. I can't condone any of it, but I probably should have still been in jail. Wasn't caught, did no harm, but made some bad decisions along the way. Insurance companies acknowledge that teens have faster reflexes than older drivers, plus better eyesight, all that. But the reason that insurance companies charge far more for a teen driver is that they make bad decisions.

My driver's ed instructor weighed 600lbs and had low grade narcolepsy.

It was a challenge.

I grew up in my dads autobody repair shop..... growing up I made many a trip to the junk yards to look at cars with him. Seeing teeth \ hair \ blood embedded in windshields....blood all over the interior had a definite impact on me... Now I sure did some Very stupid sh$t as a teen but speeding drunk in a car was Not one of them.... I did get a DUI when I was about 20 and the officer said the biggest tipoff was that I was driving too slow on the highway...he thought I must have been stoned - not drunk....

The problem is the ban hammer isn't hit hard enough. A slap on the wrist, pay a fine, all's good.

Picture says everything.
We’re not just allowed to shoot them.
Shame, really.
This is why I believe we should have harsh physical punishments. There are just some people who cannot be turned around by conventional methods. Some need to be exposed to intense physical pain. I believe we, as a society, would benefit from it.

Uh, I have a teenage mug shot from in the 70's. Back then they would have been more than willing, and happy to drive your tongue back into your mouth. Of course this would all have been done privately at the police station but you get the picture.

tell me again why the drinking age is 21 but kids can drive at 15? :hmm:
I was just in Italy and discussing this with a tour guide. The drinking age is 18 there, but it's common for parents to let their kids try wine starting at 14-15. Then when the kids are 18, it's not taboo to the point where they go out and get hammered like they do in the states. They also don't start driving cars till 18, but can drive small scooters starting at 14 and bigger scooters at 16.

The difference as far as driving in the states though is that our population is so spread out compared to European countries, so more people have to drive here.

Yup! When I had just gotten my drivers license, I had friends that ran a wrecker service, and I was enlisted a couple times to bring the wheel lift to accidents when he had to tow more than 2 cars...the sight of carnage like that, one time with the body still in the car, made a really strong impression on me.

The biggest deterrent to me involved a kid I never knew...at 14, this kid named Sam took his brothers Camaro out one night after Sam's girlfriend broke up with him, and wrapped it around a tree, killing himself in the process. It was all over the news, and the day of the funeral, a guy on the school bus says, "Well, they planted Sam today." The girl I was sitting with on the bus just exploded on him...she got up in his face and gave him holy hell..."Imagine his parents, sitting there next to the casket, burying their son! How about his brother? How do you think he feels, for just leaving his car keys in the same place he's always left them? Or his girlfriend?" Man, that stuck in my head, and kept me from being a complete idiot behind the wheel.

Admittedly, I was a typical teenager. I did my share of street racing. I drove under the influence of alcohol and pot. But I was smart enough to realize when I was too far gone to get home safely. I got a pass from Mom the times that I didn't call to let them know I was staying out, just by telling her that I'd had too much fun the night before, and slept where I fell. She asked me the first 2 times I did it exactly what happened, and I fessed up to too much Jim Beam (the first time), and too much vodka (the second), and she told me that she trusted me to make the right choices from then on.
