Wrote a letter to Santa asking for one. I was 17 then.

Very manly...

I went to college then medical school then residency then worked in the hospital 80 hours a week for seven years just to get a Les Paul. Now that is certifiably nuts. I didn't have to nor would I ever recommend buying one on credit.

so anyway i was just wondering, what are some of the craziest things you guys have ever done to get your guitar?
sorry if A) this thread has already been done, and B)it's just a terrible idea...

Craziest thing?
Stood in a room full of people drooling over Jacksons, picked up a Les Paul and tols a salesman I was buying it.

I would never pay monthly for my guitar, either you have the money or you don't.

Can't believe people would get themselves in trouble for a guitar, set your priorities.

When the time is right you'll get your LP.

Some of the most sound advice ever given here.

As to the two posts I just quoted--Amen...
(Although I did get my Mustang on layaway--right after I started a new job, but I knew I'd have the money--I just spread it out so I didn't go broke.)

I bought a beautiful Honey Burst standard on 10 month interest free credit because I played it and fell in love with it. The guy in the shop said I could take it away there and then and I was sold. I took it home and didn't play it for 10 months because I didn't feel it was mine yet. I must say though, that I had the money to cover it but was scared it would be sold before I could get the cash from my savings account (you have to give 30 days notice to withdraw) Ever since then it's always cash up front.

Both LPs I bought I didn't "need" because I had too many guitars already. Absolutely don't regret it. Just looking at them makes me feel good! Plus, look at it this way -- can you save $6/day? In a year, there's your Lester.

Got into debt(I had a job at the time). But worth it. Another week without one, I'd be dead.

I thinks it`s very unfair to say that if you can`t pay for a guitar outright, then you shouldn`t have it.
For a lot of people this is not possible & paying monthly is the only option.
If you see the guitar of your dreams, it feels and sounds like "its the one", then why not pay monthly to ensure you get it ? - you only live once, and as long as you CAN afford the monthly payments, then damn well go for it I say !!
The only thing I do not agree with is big interest payments for doing this, many stores in the UK offer interest free terms for 12 months.
Back to the post, I also just sold a motorcycle to get my first Les Paul, hell of a lot safer & you don`t get cold & wet using it !

Thats not true at all.

As a person paying monthly myself I feel it fair to point out that for me this made perfect financial sense. I can spread the payments out over 9 months with no interest. Trust me, im not in trouble, i just didnt want to shell out a grand with other outgoings to manage.

My priorities are just fine thanks. :thumb:

For most of us here a guitar is just a toy, a serious toy but still just a toy.

I feel like if you want toys you should be able to pay for them outright without financing. If you have to finance a guitar or amp then you cant afford it.

Just my 2 cents

i cant speak for you so please dont speak for me. my guitars are way more than toys. they are a part of me. i honestly wouldnt be able to live without a guitar. as sad as it is if i had to choose between being married to my wife and not being able to play guitar for the rest of my life, or being able to play my guitar but not be able to see my wife, i would choose my guitar. im probably going to burn in hell for that. but its the truth. there is nothing closer to me than my guitar. its my best friend.

A guitar is definately NOT a toy, no musical instrument is a toy - it is a way of expressing our musical talent, emotions, personality and feelings - some people find it easier to express these things in a musical instrument.
There was a government backed scheme in UK for certain dealers to offer musical instruments to everybody on interest free terms with no deposit - this is to encourage young and lower paid people to gain musical interest.
An X Box is a toy - a musical instrument is NOT !

( Just my opinions of course, don`t mean to rant ! ) :)

BTW, for me anyway, the wife always comes before the guitar :naughty:

I love playing my guitars, sure - but sometimes I just get 'em out and look at them. I take photos of them and email the photos to people........they're important to me in a way that most things aren't.

I've never done anything too crazy to get one...although I've been impulsive a couple of times. Several thousand dollars worth of impulsive, and I'm definitely not rich.

I've had nothing at a few points in my life - been literally at rock bottom. So if I have enough money now and then to spend a few thousand dollars on something that I own simply for my own pleasure, so be it. I think it's a good thing.
