OK never ever ever compare the brilliance of the Allmans to the rip-off artist that is Santana... seriously every one of his licks sound the same, and they should since he stole almost all of them from Peter Green. In case you couldn't tell I hate Santana... I mean HATE him. Duane could have played circles around that poser... Derek and Warren definitely can and Dickey could have back in the day.

Duane's the reason I got back into guitar. I'd heard their music on the radio, but never paid attention until a friend recommend I check out Eat A Peach. I bought the deluxe edition, and while I still think the album is great, the second disk (The Filmore Closing concert) was amazing. Better than At Filmore East, in my opinion. Statesboro Blues, Don't Keep Me Wonderin', You Don't Love Me, and Whipping Post just drew me right in. Call me hooked. Kind of odd, though, as I rarely ever play any ABB on guitar.

That being said, I don't have anything post-Peach. Recommendations?

Live Albums man, there are a few from the original line up and they are awesome, allman brothers are a live band.

I'd try getting

"Live at Ludlow Garage" - AWESOME mountain jam and dreams on there and I'm Gunna move to the outskirts of town. All around great album.

"Live At Atlanta Pop Festival" Another fantastic live album. Duane actually got stuck in traffic going to this festival, ditched his car and rode on the back of some strangers motorcycle through the traffic and made it to the stage with seconds to spare.

"S.U.N.Y. At Stonybrook: Stonybrook, NY 9/19/71" All I can say about this album, is 20minute dreams and it is to die for.

That should be an ok start, defiantly check out some of the albums where duane was still a session player.

stuff like this
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reeE8mbh0zA]YouTube - The Weight - Aretha Franklin (1969)[/ame]

clearly the greatest version of "the weight" ever recorded, duane rockin the slide and aretha franklin!

Either you are deaf, 12 or live in Japan. If you hate the tone master, then your opinion has zero value.

Hate seems a bit extreme.

I was a fan in the 70s, Europa (what was the name of that double album- had it out the other day) but nah, Santana doest do it for anymore. Not for 20 years anyway. Dull.

he used to be great, most people agree now that his concerts have turned it "the puerto rican day parade". Thats how one guy described it to me, and I've heard numerous other very similar descriptions.

but take this discussion elsewhere. This is not the santana thread.

I admire much of Santana's early works, but he has been riding a along on his merits for the past 10 years propping himself up with rappers and pop top 40 vocalists.

Hmm not deaf, 29 and yeah I live in Japan but grew up in TN. He may be a master of the one tone he has, that muddy crappy tone.

Sorry man lol I just cannot stand Santana( and I agree his earlier stuff was ok) I was stating my opinion that he is not even on the same level as any of the Allmans guitar players... especially Duane, who basically INVENTED slide lead guitar in a rock context.

Filmore East will always been in my top 10 albums of all time. Its just a cornerstone of why I play (attempt to) play guitar.

And Duane Allman played on the whole Layla and other assorted Love Songs album

There are a couple of songs on that album that Duane wasn't involved with.

Yes, it was September of '71. I didn't go to school there but my friends brother was dorming there and we went to visit him quite a bit on weekends to party. That was one of the first shows of the semester.

As River stated details are a bit foggy (6hr long show and mescaline), but like Gibi says, I too was mesmerized. I remember the tone was to die for. Duanes slide had me from the first note and I didn't leave my seat in all that time, not wanting to miss out. No idea which guitar he played, but I think he switched out a few times over the course of the night, might have been handing them to a tech for tuning... don't quite recall.

It was a great time to see bands like this in small college gyms, the exception being Zep in arena shows. But yeah, Foghat, Alice Cooper, ABB, Tull, Fleetwood Mac, Uriah Heep, the list is long. My buddies and I even got recorded on Peter Framptons, 'Frampton Comes Alive' recorded at Plattsburgh State University gym, the audience mics where hanging just above us.

Weren't you the one who I had the conversation about Lynyrd Skynyrd opening for Black Sabbath? I know you love music, wished you could have been there.

No offense but after that post I officially hate you ;)

It's all good. But you know there a quite a few guys around my age on this board who can tell the same stories. Great time to be alive.

Is it wrong that I, as a long-time ABB fan, actually like Dickey's playing better than Duane's? Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Duane's work but, for whatever reason, Dickey's just seems to 'speak' to me more. Maybe I'm just a freak or something...

I was born in '69 but wish I had been born in the '50s just so that I could've been around to see my favourite bands before they became huge.
