Pre-Amp buying questionaire

It is unbelievable how many folks as of late have been asking for amp recomendations. It is amazing how many folks would let perfect strangers help them decide on how to spend a substantial amount of money. It is amazing how many folks expect recomendations for amplifiers when they provide little (if any) information on what they need in an amplifier. Hell, even when people are kind enough to ask for some information to customize their recomendations to the OP's needs, the OP just completely ignores them? Perhaps it is time for a questionaire/sticky? Before someone asks for recomendations, there are certain questions which need to be answered, otherwise all the OP can expect is the, "I have it, it's perfect for me, so it is perfect for you" type answer.

What amplifier(s) do you have/had and why do you want a change? marshall solid states, a randall solid state and a tube peavey head (XXX). I want a change because im looking more into clean boutique tones rather than high gain and tubes are a must.

What did you like about them? Tubes are a necessity, and i like the option of 2 channels and channel and master volumes. Pristine fender like cleans .. i play mostly a clean tone on the verge of breaking up. and the option of rocking some kiss or gnr when requested.
What did you not like about them? lack of information online, and lack of testers in stores. id love some opinions from you guys !

I am new to guitars and this forum as well. The reasons I use this forum for is the expertise of the people that have been here and gone around the block. I find that asking people here is better than going to a sales guy who works on commission.

What does that have to do with anything?
Do you gig out or is it a practice amp? < this is a relevant question.
You could get a really great sounding amp that is 5 watts and will blow your windows out if you need it to. You won't spend a fortune on it and they have great resale value should you decide to upgrade in the future.
Look at how many people are taking a beating on their JMP's DSL's and JCM's because now they decide that they wanted a smaller amp after all.
You guys that want a great tone with saturated gain when you need it that won't get you evicted or drive you broke, look at the BlackHearts, Orange Tiny Terror and even the Epiphone valve Jr. just to name a few.

I just started playing and I want to sound like Slash. I also want the whole town to know that I just started playing so I bought a Jubilee. Maybe I could reach the next town, let me try the volume on 2.

Why can't a guy enter a forum and say" I am looking for an amp. I have x amount and I like the sound of tubes" and get an reply and maybe a discussion. Thats what a forum is isn't it?
What he gets is "here go fill out this form and have a seat on the group W bench" with all the father rapers.
Did somebody get sick of these types of threads and forgot how not to click on something?

Hi and welcome

There are two reasons I threw in the how long you been playing question. First, beginners quit all the time, even if a beginner sticks with it, which is great, it isn't a good idea to spend a lot of money on gear. Even though, a lot of money is relative. Secondly, newbies have a lot to learn, so if a responder sees someone knew, they will know to explain the technical jargon and not assume how much someone knows.

The reason the questionnaire was created was because so many people would start a thread, I have X dollars, what amp should I get. Kinda vague and impossible to make a good recommendation. Usually all that happened was people saying, buy the amp I have, it's the best. That would be fine, but because amps vary so much, what might be ideal for one person, can be overkill, limited, too much distortion, not enough distortion, too loud, too quiet, not enough break up, too much break up, and so on. The questionnaire was a way to really see what the potential buyer wants so they can be given the best options.

If you dont want to fill it out, cool, free country, however see what you get. You'll get two pages of people saying buy the amp I have, even if the amp they have is not at all what's best for the person asking.
