jlb: That's a nice glossy one. I have always thought that those Classics were nice. Does it still have the "1960" on the pickguard--my old eyes cannot decipher! I've also thought the "1960" was a cool touch
foxtrot: Cool. Were those ones chambered like the Standards of that year?
Twizzle: That is a mighty fine "first" LP. Looks in terrific shape to; the gold appointments add some real class

First LP was an Ibanez GT I received for my 15th B'day back in 1978. Long gone now.

Only pic I still have.

I got my first Les Paul at some point in the 90's, a '79 Custom (Ebony, of course) because of a tiny inheritance (just enough to get the guitar) left to me by my grandfather.

I still have it and it's not going anywhere, sentimental value and all that... :)

Of course i have played, owned and sold nice guitars before and after that, but this was the first actual Les Paul i Owned. Not the last though :)

My first and only Les Paul is an Epiphone 2013 Standard Plus Top Pro which I got in 2013. It has a pretty slick red flame maple top and mahogany body/neck. Also came with Epi probuckers (almost analogous to Gibson 57's) and Grover Tuners. Still have it, and refuse to sell it. Unfortunately, the screw and washer accidentally fell off the input jack, and it is a tedious process to re-screw it back on, so I plan to get that fixed later.

To be honest, I stumbled into Les Pauls after listening to Slash, who manifested the resurgence of these guitars. That practically assured my interest in Les Pauls, causing me to go to Guitar Center and pick up the Epi. I might mod the Epi to have DiMarzios (like Al Di Meola's guitar) or just leave it the way it is, but it is a fantastic guitar.

My first is a 2007 Vintage Mahogany Studio. Worn brown with the BB Pros. Still have it. I don't think I can get rid of it. Plays great, sounds awesome and looks pretty darn cool.

BBC: That is SWEET! I've said it before, but I really think those Classics are cool!
Epi rocks: Those were the days, aye? We were on the edge of the musical EXPLOSION in all styles. Disco was moribund and NWOBHM was just about to explode "Where were you in '79 when the dam began to burst"--Saxon "Denim and Leather"
grumphh: I'm so glad you kept it. I still have my '83 SG Deluxe, and I wrestle with selling it so that someone else can have enjoyment out of it and the whole sentimental thing. Not an SG guy anymore
Pesh: Very nice. What is that, Wine Red? I like those (Grover?) tuners. I'd like to put them on all my LPs, but I don't want to hack them up
RandyRhodesLP: I really like the Gibson 57s. I've had issues with the input nut working loose too. Just the nature of the beast. As I said to Pesh, I really like the Grovers
penguinchit: Lots of guys swear by those Studios. The fact that you have played it so much speaks volumes (plays volumes) :laugh2:

Kris Ford: Thanks for the "Thank You" Brother
And you are welcome!

Here's my story.
First Gibson with "Les Paul" on the headstock was a 90-91(?? I don't remember the actual year..) black Les Paul Special. (I bought a '71 SG when I was 17..for 200 bucks, that was my FIRST Gibson, sold it 4 years later when I was in the Navy. (I joined when I was 17 as well, took it with me on the ship even!)

I got it in 93, and traded a '74 Fender Thinline Telecaster for it, (plus cash...) and realize I got screwed on that deal every day..:(
But in the early 90's those Teles weren't well regarded..and the LP Special was NEW, so maybe it was more fair than I remember. Funny, as I had older "experts" tell me that it wasn't a real Fender, that model never existed..etc..etc..(which these A-holes are what made me go on the quest for knowledge BY MYSELF, as there was A LOT of bad info going around..still is..)

I had that, but didn't bond with it...so I traded that LP Special for a '72 SG Pro, which sounded killer, but it being young, I traded it even for a '78 SG Special, (which for that year, was basically a Standard, with an unbound dot fretboard) Killer guitar, but dumb me moved that one..

Fast forward to when I was discharged from the NAVY and came home, I kept trading up, trading laterally, even trading down, (all SGs btw) til I somehow wound up with a 1975 Tobacco Sunburst (the almost BLACK to brown variant) Les Paul Deluxe, that was in rough shape, and I lovingly searched the entire Detroit area for parts, and made it whole again, and remember clearly, sitting and watching TV while polishing the finish, restoring the shine to a mirror like glow. there were 2 issues with that one which bugged me though.

First, was there was a seam separation, that a "heavy" pick would fit in..and there was a mini-toggle..somehow, someone had tapped a mini-hum! It was all disconnected, but can't imagine how that might have sounded..hell, it may have been awesome..but I can't deal with non-Gibson installed mods like that..so, maybe, in part to how, even at a younger age, the period correct details were IMPORTANT to me, and I had luck finding the parts, and devoted a LOT of time polishing it, I was able to trade it even up for a 1964 SG Junior.

The SG Junior was awesome, and one I should have kept, but I wanted SG with binding and trapezoid inlays..(you know, the stuff you DON"T even hear..)
So the Junior went bye bye..and I spent the following years trading and buying about 40 different LPs and SGs til now, where my only LP at the time is my 'late '75/ early 76 Les Paul Deluxe (with full size humbuckers)

Kinda like going full circle.:naughty:

My 1st Gibson Les Paul was a 1988 Custom Lite Black Beauty that I picked up the spring of 93 for $400 OTD with case, 3 years later I sold it for $1200..
That's how you gotta love em for appreciating three fold in just a few years..

I would give $2000 for that guitar now but not a penny more

I had a bass guitar that sat on a stand from age 12-21. I decided that bass wasn't for me and that I should give the guitar a try. I went to my local GC 3 years ago and got an LPJ Gold top with a Fender Mustang II amp. I loved that LPJ and decided I didn't want it anymore for whatever reason, and I traded it in for a 2011 SG which I also loved.

I traded in the SG towards a 2013 LP Traditional Pro II which I still have today. Buying and selling music equipment has been a hobby of mine since I started playing the guitar. It's fun, but sometimes I wish I had held on to certain guitars/amps.

First was an Epiphone Les Paul that I got in 95, after starting out with a superstrat copy in 91. I still have both (though the Epi lives with my brother now).

First Gibson LP was a 1980 natural standard. Got that in 2011 and no longer have it. Sweet sounding but weighed a tonne. Happier with my R0 (and, shhhh, whisper it, my 80s Tokais).

1980, it was a 1971 gold top Deluxe with mini humbuckers. The owner of a local music store I still go to has it now.

My first Gibson LP was a white LP Supreme because I liked Randy Rhoads but I was young, dumb and didn't want to wait on the shop to order in an LPC for me. I liked how it looked, I didn't like the feel of the squared frets/profile and I didn't like how hard it was to access the electronics to mod them up. Unfortunately I don't have it anymore but I would probably be able to recognize it. It has some blemishes on the front from a guitar stand and it has an uncovered Suhr Aldrich in the bridge with a pot to split the coils.

A few shots:

I had other LPs before and other Gibsons before but that was my first Gibson LP.

My first was a 10 year old 83 custom I bought when I was a much younger man...I sold it for a $300 profit about 1 year later and have never gotten over it...

There was nothing particularly special about the burst or the grain or the pickups...but it was the first guitar I paid for myself and what I would give to still have it...a few hundred dollars means nothing when compared to sentimentality...
