Hi!

This is my 2009 Les Paul Custom. I bought it specifically to mod. It's the perfect candidate for what I have always wanted. I am planning on having my Luthier swap all the hardware for chrome, including pickup covers and installing a middle pickup. It's my dream configuration. I have wanted a black 3 pickup Custom with Chrome for decades. I know if I mod this guitar I will LOVE it. The neck, weight and balance is perfect for me. It's one of the best playing Les Paul's I have ever touched and it weighs a little under 10 pounds.

Before I do this, I would like to ask if Gibson ever made a black 3 pickup Custom with a slim neck that is under 10 pounds? All the ones I have ever played had a thick C shaped 50s profile and were on the heavier side. I dont like big necks at all and they have all been heavier than I like.

I am also not interested in an Epiphone so please don't reccomend an Epi.

Also, just for curiosity sake, can you please tell me if they have ever made a black 3 pickup Custom with Chrome Hardware? I have seen a few Cusoms with chrome but never a 3 pickup version.

If I can find a black 3 pickup Custom with a slim neck that I like, that is under 10 pounds I'll buy it and swap the hardware for Chrome (if neccesary). If not, I'm going to have my Luthier mod this one as planned.

Thanks!

My 69 Custom had the most comfortable neck that I've ever played on a LP, but I would not have called it slim.
Good luck on your search !!

chrome is devil's work... go nickel or don't go

agree.
I had to use chrome covers on one of my guitars as the nickel looked too golden against the metal rings, stainless parts and plastic “chrome” parts...
Normally it doesn’t matter but this was an all silver bonanza

shockingly, the chrome looks Awesome....I’ve kinda become a fan..

anything chrome can do, nickel can do better imo. I like the wear, you see a 30 year old guitar with shiny covers and the rest of it is worn... just doesn't work for me

The only one that I know of that has a truly slim neck (aside from maybe a true '60s?) that they made are on the Frampton Signature models and no doubt the "Phenix" model.

You can do a custom lite. Its a thin neck (actually it may be 50’s) I believe but you would still need to modify it for the 3 pickups in any case.

its a less expensive place to start and modify since you’re probably not interested in other MiJ guitars.

Norlin era ...... 1976 thru 1982 have some of the slimmest necks ..... my 1977 and 1978 Customs have very slim necks..... though not too many 3 pup versions. My 1978 CSB Custom has Chrome hardware.... I’ve owned it since 1980.

My 2011 Custom is chubbier,... but I wouldn’t call it anything close to my R9

All Customs I've played and tried never had slim necks. Always a more "rounded" type of neck-profile. But why not sanding it when it's too fat? :)
I love 3 PU Customs, so no big deal for an experienced luthier.
