Exactly like my ex-girlfriend. :D
Safe is safe. :naughty:

OP, think about it. It's common sense. A case on end can fall over. A case on it's back can't - it's already flat on its back.

A case flat on its back can be in an earthquake, and the ceiling can fall on it. If the ceiling hits a mattress and box spring on its way down to the case, the case still has a good chance. If the ceiling is being driven into said bed by 40 floors of high-rise, the case, guitar, and everything you hold dear will be pulverized to the consistency of talcum powder, and the guitar will be the least of your worries.

Haa! I KNEW you'd grab my original post River! Good on ya! :applause:

And to the OP: I keep all my guitars on stands in my living room. I have no pets, no kids, so there's no danger of them going anywhere. Or anyone unwittingly doing anything to them.

When I travel with them they live in their case flat on the floor.

Safer that way...

Dark humor is good. But if you want me to redact my quote, speak now or forever hold your peace.

I leave home for days at a time with my guitars on (solid) stands or even the couch and easy chair. And I have five cats and two dogs, chasing each other through the house at odd hours as if their lives depended on outrunning each other. Haven't suffered a casualty yet and, if I do, it'll be my fault.

Bottom line - guitars aren't that fragile. But I never leave the Martin acoustic where my Great Pyrenees might come down on the spruce top with a half-ton of exuberant "tsst-tsst, get the cat!" force. He's just a big galump, after all.

I play mine a lot so I usually keep it on the stand by my amp. I'm leaving for Germany for two weeks as part of my obligation to the USAF and will be keeping it in it's case. Is it best to have it standing up, flat on its back, or on it's side if it's going to be stored in the case?

any input is greatly appreciated.

your pal,

-chris

Since I live in earthquake territory I would lay it flat.

have you heard of this being better, or is it just the way you like to do it.

Also, this is probably bad but I don't even know what # air force I am. I think it's 10th.

I believe that I read on here the BCR Greg stood his up. If memory serves me correctly, he included a picture of some of his cases standing on end including a few with checker board pattern (a la Rick Neilson).

http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/gib...perts-chime-best-way-store-your-les-paul.html

That was good enough for me. I stand all of mine up except for my R6 & R7 that have the new Lifton-style cases (those cases don't have feet on their tail ends). Since I live in earthquake country, I kind of brace them in place (to prevent them from tipping over).

Doesn't matter how you store it. It's only a few weeks.

I'm no expert but seems to me if you stand it up it can fall and get damaged, if you put on its side, it can tip over and get damaged, but if you lay it on its back it has nowhere to go, yep that's what I'd do. But let me leave this with thought with you....We ain't partners, we ain't brothers and we ain't pals pal, and if Gans gets away you're going to be sorry you ever met me. Right now I should be home giving my lady the high hard one and instead I'm here talking about guitar cases.

A standing the case up story. I snapped the neck on my Ovation 12 string many moons ago when something happened out of the blue. I was leaving my friends house and stood the guitar up for just a moment, when his dog came barreling out of the house at full speed right through the storm door, knocking the guitar down with a sharp bang. The tops of those Ovation cases were totally flat and it hit the ground like a clapper. Of course the neck snapped and I died a little inside. Now I NEVER stand a case up with a guitar inside, I learned the hard way.

The picture you see of the crack is now the third and final fix. Last year I resurrected it for the third time and my luthier said if you screw it up this time all that's left is to give is a burial at sea. It plays great even today, and I treat it with kid gloves. After twenty years in storage it's nice to see it active again.

I stand all my guitars (15) in the cases straight up. No pressure on the neck at all. I only have to tweak the necks about once or twice a year.

This has always been my thought too vs. laying them down. But just a preference really...I don't know for fact if it make a difference either way.

I use to run the D.A.R.E. program for Lakenheath and Feltwell. I probably spent more time there than on Mildenhall. Mildenhall kinda sucked but I was grateful we didn't have to deal with the PRP stuff :). I wonder if the Galaxy Club is still open?

GO 3RD AIR FORCE BABY!

I've spent some quality time in the Galaxy Club.......

On topic - I lay my cases flat.

Per Sgt. Shultz on Hogan's Hero's: "I know nothingk, absolutely nothingk" .... but either Gibson or Epiphone owners manual (or both) advises against standing case on end due to increased risk of falling and damaging guitar in process. While River and his experience should certainly weigh heaver than my uninformed opinion/experience, I was always told not to store a guitar laying flat on it's back or front as it would more easily lend itself to warping left laying in that position for an extended length of time, especially if temperature elements vary considerably. My 2 cents, for what it's worth.

Btw I stand them up when I put them away....I don't leave them out around standing up. That's just asking to get them knocked over.

I've heard this too... The proper way to store a guitar in its case is on it's side. Laying them flat on their back supposedly can lead to the neck getting warped due to gravity and temperature. No idea how true this is, but yep I've heard it as well.

Very small world - I used to fly C-141's into Germany (and a ton of other places), often several times a month out of McGuire. Worked F-15's before that out of Langley. You're making me miss it all :^) One of our crew used to bring his Tak acoustic with him, good old days for sure.
